Speaker: Polyakova, A. (The Brookings Institute Foreign Policy Center on the United States and Europe)
Date: 25 April 2018
SMA hosted a speaker session presented by Dr. Alina Polyakova (The Brookings Institute Foreign Policy Center of the United States and Europe) as a part of its SMA EUCOM Speaker Series. Dr. Polyakova’s talk focused on how the Kremlin deployed influence to undermine Western democracies and disrupt Western values, including the Kremlin’s toolkit and its “firehose of falsehood” strategy. While noting that the US has the tools to respond to these disinformation and influence tactics, she cautioned that Russia’s toolkit is quickly becoming yesterday’s game, and that Russia and other adversarial nations will adopt new strategies, possibly within the next two to three years. She discussed emerging threats, including exploitation of artificial intelligence and machine learning, deep faking tactics, and advanced targeting capabilities, and what the US could do to avoid being caught off guard. Dr. Polyakova concluded by stressing the importance of working together with other nations to combat disinformation.
This speaker session was not recorded as per the speaker’s request.
