SMA hosted a speaker session presented by LTC Lee Barnard (J5 Security Cooperation – Central Asia), LTC Mark Baucom (J5 Assessments and Communications Synchronization – Central & South Asia), LTC Aslan Sayyar (J5 Security Cooperation – Afghanistan), LTC Ron Storer (J5 Plans – Central & South Asia), and Col Eero Keravuori – moderator (J5 Combined Strategic Analysis Group) as a part of its SMA CENTCOM (Afghanistan) Speaker Series. During this panel discussion, LTC Storer and LTC Sayyar spoke about the United States’ strategy and primary goals in South Asia. They emphasized the importance of both looking at Afghanistan from a regional perspective and maintaining security, stability, and prosperity in the region. LTC Baucom then discussed how the “carrot and stick” approach in Afghanistan has not been effective so far and how we must control the narrative being propagated in Afghanistan. To conclude the session, LTC Barnard spoke about various countries’ activities and the extent of their influence in both Afghanistan and other countries in the region.
