Date: 23 May 2018
SMA hosted a speaker session presented by Dr. Jacqueline Schneider (US Naval War College) as a part of its SMA STRATCOM Academic Alliance Speaker Series. Dr. Schneider began the session by discussing both sides of the argument of whether we can use traditional models of deterrence in cyberspace or not. She also explained who and what we are looking to deter in addition to the pros and cons of deterrence by denial and deterrence by punishment. She also reviewed her team’s findings regarding cross-domain deterrence in cyberspace while focusing on escalation, signaling, and deterring cyber actions. To conclude the session, Dr. Schneider spoke about her survey experiment designed to determine US public opinion on cyber attacks as well as the policy implications of her work.
