Speaker Session Preview

SMA hosted a speaker session presented by Dr. Pauletta Otis (SoSACorp) as a part of its SMA General Speaker Series. Dr. Otis began her presentation by discussing the increasing presence of neo-nationalism in countries such as Turkey, Egypt, China, Venezuela, and Japan. She then characterized modern-day neo-nationalism, while emphasizing that today’s definition of neo-nationalism does not align with definitions established in the past. She also described the major changes in neo-nationalism that have occurred over the past year and explained how changes within and between states result in new conflict characteristics, as well as changes in the nature and character of sub-state violence. Dr. Otis concluded by identifying a variety of indicators of change that should be addressed and laid out the way ahead for her future research.
