SMA hosted a speaker session presented by Dr. Jacqueline Schneider (US Naval War College) as a part of its SMA STRATCOM Academic Alliance Speaker Series. Dr. Schneider began the session by discussing both sides of the argument of whether we can use traditional models of deterrence in cyberspace or not. She also explained who and what we are looking to deter in addition to the pros and cons of deterrence by denial and deterrence by punishment. She also reviewed her team’s findings regarding cross-domain deterrence in cyberspace while focusing on escalation, signaling, and deterring cyber actions. To conclude the session, Dr. Schneider spoke about her survey experiment designed to determine US public opinion on cyber attacks as well as the policy implications of her work.
Dr. Jacquelyn Schneider
Jacquelyn G. Schneider is an Assistant Professor at the U.S. Naval War College and a core facultymember of the Center for Cyber Conflict Studies. Her research focuses on the intersection oftechnology, national security, and political psychology with a special interest in cyber, unmannedtechnologies, and Northeast Asia. Her work has appeared in print in Journal of Conflict Resolution andStrategic Studies Quarterly, and on-line at a series of outlets including Foreign Affairs, War on the Rocks,and Washington Post. Jacquelyn is an active member of the defense policy community with adjunctpositions at the Center for a New American Security and previously at the RAND Corporation. Beforebeginning her academic career, she spent six years as an Air Force officer in South Korea and Japan andis currently a reservist assigned to U.S. Cyber Command.
